Neil McGuire's Idea
My current experience...
How many times have you stood at a pedestrian crossing, waiting for four different traffic directions to be given priority before you can cross? How often have you, as a motorist, sat at a pedestrian light when there was no one crossing because it took too long and the person crossed by themselves anyway before the green man?
Wouldn't it be better if...
There was a new pedestrian crossing with two buttons (one for a normal crossing, one for the elderly or infirm which lasts for longer) and both these buttons activate the pedestrian crossing straight away, empowering the pedestrian - the design of our streets - carchitecture as some call it - is balanced way too far in favour of vehicles and it's time to re-prioritise for pedestrians, making walking a seamless efficient pleasurable experience.
