Tom Steinberg's Idea
My current experience...
Attempting to pay my self assessment tax on the HMRC website is a misery. There's no clear link from the homepage to tax payment, and even when you find the tiny, buried link it leads to a page that lures you down a false avenue of unhelpful options before you realise that the actual link you needed to click in was buried hyper-unintuitively in a left hand menu. Once you've got in there are far more clicks than necessary, there's a pointless use of branding 'Billpay' to confuse users about what option they need to click, and constantly dreadful page layout all the way through to the entering credit card details, once you've finally found them.
Wouldn't it be better if...
For the week before the tax payment deadline the HMRC webpage should be replace by three HUGE links: "Pay your tax", "File your tax return", and "Find out other stuff about tax". When you click on "Pay your tax" it should take you directly to a page where you can enter your tax reference number, and your credit card details. Really not so hard when you come to look at it that way is it?
